Τhe purpose of the seminar is to examine the history of art photography emphasizing, in particular,  the social context and the aesthetic elements with which the different photographic styles are associated. The seminar will also cover the basic concepts informing the theory of photography, as well as the styles and techniques of photographic composition.

Topics for discussion: The beginning of photography in the mid-19th century. The portrait. The ambiguous relation of photography to painting. Naturalism and Pictorialism.
Photography and social documentary. Modernism and “New Objectivity”. Photography and artistic currents during the interwar period.
Photography, social reform and American culture. War photography. “Straight photography” and snapshot. Contemporary photography.
